February Book Round-Up || 2020

February came and went so fast that I feel like I blinked and suddenly it was March. Where has the time gone? Not that I am complaining, March is one of my favourite times of the year, as I feel like I’m finally out of my winter slump, spring is in the air, the days start to get longer, and work starts to be busier. With that being said, February was still a great month book-wise. I’ve kept a pretty steady pace, reading almost the same number of books as last month, despite wasting the first 2 weeks on a terrible book (more on that later). According to my goodreads account, I am now 7 books ahead of schedule on my reading goal! I’m starting to think maybe 50 books was too low of a goal… but I don’t want to jinks my self on that one just in case I have a slow month where I don’t read at all.

Now it’s time for the round-up! As per usual, I’m not going to give you guys a full synopsis of each book (I would check them out on goodreads for that), but I am going tell you some quick thoughts on each book and whether I’d recommend it. But with all that said… lets get into the books!

The Best

You know me, I like to start things off with a bang, so we’re going straight into my favourites from the month! These books all got five stars over on goodreads from me. I would recommend any of these in a heartbeat.

Loved getting a romance novel from a mans perspective, as well as a story about falling back in love as a married couple already together. Such a cute book. One of my fave romance novels I’ve ever read!

I didn’t even think it was possible to write a sequel as good as the first book in the series, but some how she’s done it!! Mack is the perfect lead in a book and I really loved reading him and Liv’s journey together all with an underlining story of smashing the patriarchy. Love love love, so excited for this one to come out!

Woven in Moonlight - Isabel Ibañez

I'm not going to lie, I bought this book 100% for the beautiful book cover. So glad it ended up being such a beautiful story! I travelled through South America early last year, and the Bolivian backdrop to this fantasy novel took me right back. Such a great book about revenge, politics, with a bit of love and romance in there as well. A great lesson about how we as humans are better when we treat each other as equals.

The Girl With The Louding Voice - Abi Daré

“Not his-story” I say. “My own will be called her-story. Adunni’s story.”

Wow, what a beautiful and touching story. The main character is fierce, strong, and brave as she continues to fight her way towards an education. A book about resilience.

This one made me cry! such a great book. So much better than I was expecting. A beautiful story about how we perceive others, how we portray ourselves, and who we truly are. So many twists and turns I wasn’t expecting and the ending had me in tears. Love love love.

The so not good.

Last month, I had this category set at “meh”, but I just couldn’t bring my self to label this one as just “meh” because it was just bad. Like, so bad. I very rarely DNF (aka do not finish) a book, I can only think of a few books in my life that I’ve done it with… and this is one of them.

Star Crossed - Minnie Dark

DNF - When reading the description for this book, I was expecting a fun light-hearted read that I would be able to chew up in one night. Instead, it took me the 2 weeks to get through the first 1/3 of the book due to the utterly sluggish and boring writing style. The story held so much potential, but I just couldn't get through it.

The good reads

Maybe they didn’t make my favourites of the month, but that doesn’t mean these aren’t good books. These are all the ones in the 3.5-4 star range that I really enjoyed reading and would still recommend despite not making the best list.

AboveAllElse-Review.jpg

Above All Else - Dana Alison Levy*

A cute story with a serious undertone exploring mental health issues such as PTSD. The author has done a beautiful job describing the region of Nepal. I wish the buildup to Rose and Tate’s relationship was teased a bit more, rather than progressing what felt like suddenly. I also wish we got a bit more depth into exploring why they felt the way they did in certain situations. Would recommend it to any travel lovers out there looking for a quick read.

Wild at Heart - KA Tucker

Actually closer to a 3.5/5 stars for me. I found the first like half if not a bit more to be kinda boring? I was really hoping for a bit more action and turmoil to test their relationship but not a whole ton happened. I just love Jonah and Calla together though and the character development of some of the new people I loved. I dunno if the sequel was all that necessary to be honest but it was a nice one night kind of read. If you’ve read the first one it’s worth reading.

That’s everything for February! What I liked about this month in particular is that I feel like I read a good variety of different kinds of books. We had some romance, some more serious coming-of-age, some fantasy, some travel… all the sorts of things I love. I’ve got a pretty great TBR pile sitting ready to go for March, so I am excited for what the next month to come! What you read this last month? Let me know in the comments below.

C
